Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) are discharges of untreated and/or partially treated sewage. Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) are also discharges of untreated sewage and are sometimes referred to as spills or bypasses. The occurrence of CSOs and SSOs increases when significant rainfall occurs, particularly from extreme weather events such as hurricanes and tropical storms. During heavy rain events and the 48 hours after an event stops, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) advises against direct contact with CT's streams and rivers, in areas in close proximity to drainage pipes statewide and particularly in urban areas such as Bridgeport, Hartford, Norwalk, Norwich, and the greater New Haven area.
